Jan 21 (V7N)- The longstanding India-Pakistan conflict continues to spill over into the world of sports, with the latest controversy revolving around the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. While Pakistan holds the hosting rights for the 2025 tournament, India's reluctance to display Pakistan's name on their team jerseys has sparked a new debate.
According to Indo Asian News, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly against including the host country's name, Pakistan, on the Indian team’s jersey. In ICC tournaments, it is customary for the name of the host country and the tournament logo to appear on the left side of every team's jersey. However, BCCI’s reported stance has drawn criticism from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
A PCB official has strongly reacted, accusing India of politicising cricket. "BCCI is bringing politics into cricket. It is not good for the game. They did not want to come to Pakistan. They are not even willing to send the captain for the photo session. Now I hear they do not even want to put Pakistan's name on the jersey. I hope ICC will not allow this to happen," the official said.
The tournament is set to follow a hybrid model, with matches taking place in multiple locations due to India's refusal to play in Pakistan. Adding to the tensions, there are rumours that Indian captain Rohit Sharma might skip the pre-tournament captains' meet in Pakistan scheduled for February 17. However, the BCCI has yet to issue an official statement on this matter.
As the tournament approaches, the ICC will likely face pressure to mediate between the two cricket boards and ensure the integrity of the game is upheld. The situation remains a stark reminder of how political tensions continue to overshadow the spirit of sportsmanship.
