Guwahati, Nov 26 (V7N) — South Africa has whitewashed India 2-0 in a Test series in India, exactly 25 years after their last series sweep on Indian soil in 1999-2000. Led by captain Temba Bavuma, the Proteas defeated India by a massive 408 runs in the second session of the fifth day of the Guwahati Test, securing the series victory and setting a record for a whitewash.
Chasing an almost impossible target of 549 runs, India ended the fourth day at 27 for 2. While it was theoretically possible to avoid defeat by batting out the day, the Indian team could not withstand South Africa’s relentless bowling attack.
South African spinner Simon Harmer was the key destroyer, dismissing Kuldeep Yadav, Dhruv Jurel, Rishabh Pant, Nitish Reddy, and others, finishing with 6 wickets for 37 runs in the final innings and 9 wickets in the Test overall. Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja showed resistance with 54 runs, but wickets fell around him.
South African fielder Aiden Markram set a new world record by taking 9 catches in a single Test match, surpassing Ajinkya Rahane’s previous record against Sri Lanka in 2015.
The victory capped a dominant series for South Africa, highlighting their strength in both batting and bowling, and marking a historic repeat of their 25-year-old feat.
