Euro 2024 favourites France secured a comfortable 3-0 victory over Luxembourg in an international friendly on Wednesday, with superstar striker Kylian Mbappe among the scorers.

As the tournament in Germany approaches, starting next Friday, France is set to compete in Group D against formidable opponents: Netherlands, Austria, and Poland. Despite Luxembourg being a less challenging rival on paper, they held firm until late in the first half of this match.

Randal Kolo Muani opened the scoring for France with a soft header on 43 minutes, capitalizing on a perfect cross from Mbappe. This marked Kolo Muani's third goal in four games for the national team. Marseille defender Jonathan Clauss extended the lead with a stunning strike into the top corner at the 70-minute mark, making it 2-0.

The highlight of the evening came when substitute Bradley Barcola skillfully navigated through the visiting defense to set up Mbappe, who confidently finished the move in the 85th minute. The Real Madrid-bound forward’s goal was met with the loudest cheer from the enthusiastic home crowd.

N'Golo Kante, the 33-year-old Al-Ittihad (Saudi Arabia) midfielder, made his first appearance since June 2022. He delivered a solid performance, supporting both defense and attack, before exiting the pitch exhausted midway through the second half.

France's goalkeeper Mike Maignan had a quiet evening, with his defense effectively neutralizing Luxembourg's offensive efforts.

The friendly took place in Metz, where the local club was recently relegated from the French top flight after a play-off against Saint Etienne, who secured their return to the top division on Sunday.

Didier Deschamps' squad will face Canada next in Bordeaux on Sunday, ahead of their Euro 2024 opener against Austria on June 17 in Düsseldorf.
