Colombia confidently advanced to the quarter-finals of the Copa America with a decisive 3-0 win against Costa Rica in Arizona on Friday. Goals from Luis Diaz, Davinson Sanchez, and Jhon Cordoba ensured all three points for the Colombians, guaranteeing them a top-two finish in Group D.
The victory means Colombia will qualify as group winners if they secure at least a point against Brazil in their final group game next Tuesday. The team will approach the match with high confidence, having extended their unbeaten streak to 25 games following their performance at Glendale's State Farm Stadium.
Nestor Lorenzo's well-organized side has not lost since a defeat to Argentina in February 2022, and they maintained that record effortlessly on Friday. Liverpool's Diaz opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 31st minute after Costa Rica's goalkeeper Patrick Sequeira collided with Cordoba on the edge of the area.
Colombia nearly doubled their lead in the 37th minute when veteran midfielder James Rodriguez found Diaz at the back post. Diaz's cross into the six-yard area was almost converted by Sanchez, who missed by a narrow margin.
Sanchez redeemed himself in the 59th minute, heading in a cross from Jhon Arias to make it 2-0. Cordoba then sealed the win in the 62nd minute with a spectacular goal. An exquisite through ball from Rodriguez split the Costa Rican defense, allowing Cordoba to race in on goal and fire a shot across the goal into the far corner.
In Friday's other Copa America match, Brazil faced Paraguay in Las Vegas, aiming for their first win of the tournament after a 0-0 draw with Costa Rica in their opener.
