Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) season on Tuesday, January 30, the Comilla Victorians were defeated by Rangpur Riders by eight runs in Sylhet, and they notching their third win in the ongoing.
The Victorians faced a difficult task in the last two overs, needing 36 runs off 12 balls. They eventually lost despite Jaker Ali's strong hitting, which included two straight sixes off Shakib Al Hasan. Shakib accepted the challenge, needing to defend 29 runs in the final over. Only one run was made off the opening ball, but the Victorians lost two vital wickets in the next two balls. Even though Jaker scored eighteen runs in the final three balls, it was not enough to secure their victory.
Rangpur Riders won the toss and elected to bat first, posting a substantial total of 165 runs for the loss of five wickets. Azmatullah Omarzai contributed 36 runs, while Babar Azam top-scored with 37. Raymon Reifer of the Comilla Victorians claimed two wickets. In response, the Victorians faced an early setback with Litton Das dismissed for a first-ball duck in the opening over. Towhid Hridoy showcased brilliant play throughout, and Mahidul Islam Ankon steadied the innings with a half-century. Despite their efforts, the Victorians fell short as they struggled to meet the challenging target set by Rangpur, ultimately unable to match the required pace in the final over.
Two wickets were taken by Azmatullah Omarzai for the Riders. Shakib bowled four overs and took a wicket despite giving up more than ten runs per over despite worries about his eye problem.
Rangpur Riders' latest triumph propels them to the top three in the points table, boasting three wins in four matches. Meanwhile, the defending champions, Comilla Victorians, faced their second defeat, securing two victories in four matches and currently holding the fourth spot. Khulna Tigers and Chattogram Challengers lead the table with 8 points each.
