Sri Lanka achieved a win in their single Test match against Afghanistan by 10 wickets, but their captain, Kusal Mendis, acknowledged the upcoming difficulty as they get ready for a three-game One Day International (ODI) series.

Speaking before the initial one-day international match in Kandy on Friday, Mendis emphasized Afghanistan's growing recognition in limited-overs cricket, acknowledging the inclusion of various important players in their team.

Mendis highlighted the strong and powerful ODI team from Afghanistan, explaining that their success is a result of more opportunities in professional cricket leagues and playing in various environments. He recognized the advancements made by Afghanistan, especially seen in their remarkable achievements at the ICC Cricket World Cup, where they conquered respected teams such as England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. With Afghanistan's skilled players rejoining the team for the ODI series, Mendis expressed assurance in their team's capability to excel on their home ground.

In spite of Sri Lanka's choice to exclude ex-leader Dasun Shanaka because of his bad performance, Mendis emphasized the skills of multi-talented players Wanindu Hasaranga, Chamika Karunaratne, and Dunith Wellalage, expressing optimism that they would succeed.

Mendis highlighted the significance of creating a strong team for the upcoming One Day International (ODI) World Cup, particularly due to Sri Lanka's letdown in not making it to the Champions Trophy. He emphasized the importance of concentrating on building a strong bowling team centered around quick bowlers, keeping in mind that the World Cup will be held in South Africa in three years' time.
