Sept 21, V7N - This morning, Dhaka recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 67, placing it in the 'moderate' zone. At 8:53 AM, the city ranked 33rd among the cities worldwide with the worst air quality. In comparison, Lahore in Pakistan topped the list with an AQI of 183, followed by Kampala in Uganda at 169, and Jakarta in Indonesia at 167. An AQI score between 50 and 100 is considered moderate, indicating generally acceptable air quality, although there may be health concerns for a very small number of individuals who are unusually sensitive to air pollution.

The AQI in Bangladesh is calculated based on five key pollutants: particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5)nitrogen dioxide (NO2)carbon monoxide (CO)sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ozone.Dhaka has long struggled with air pollution, particularly during the winter months when conditions tend to worsen, while the monsoon season often brings some relief. Air pollution remains a significant global health risk, with the World Health Organization (WHO) estimating that it causes approximately seven million deaths worldwide each year.
