Sept 22, V7N - South Africa coach Rassie Erasmus declined to place blame on flyhalf Manie Libbok after his missed kick led to a 29-28 defeat against Argentina in the Rugby Championship on Saturday. Despite Libbok missing a penalty kick from close range, which could have won the game, Erasmus emphasized that the Springboks’ overall performance was the bigger issue.

"We made too many mistakes at crucial times, and Argentina took their chances," Erasmus said. He acknowledged that while the missed kick was disappointing, it shouldn't have come down to that one moment, pointing to missed lineouts and other errors throughout the match.

Libbok had kicked well throughout the week in practice, and Erasmus noted the pressure involved in such moments. However, he emphasized that the responsibility for the loss extended beyond Libbok, to both the players and the coaching staff.

Erasmus made 10 changes to his lineup, resting several regular starters, as he aimed to give the wider squad valuable experience. He stood by his decision, stating that the experience would benefit younger players in the long term, despite the disappointing result. With the return match in Nelspruit next weekend, South Africa will need just a point to secure the Rugby Championship title.

Erasmus admitted the loss was painful but remained confident that his team would regroup, particularly with the return of rested key players for the crucial rematch.
