Dhaka, Jan 12 (V7N) — The human metapneumovirus (HMPV), which has caused widespread concern in China, has now been identified in Bangladesh. The virus was detected in the body of one person, according to Dr. Ahmed Nowsher Alam, head of the Virology Department at the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR).

Speaking to the media on Sunday, Dr. Nowsher confirmed that another bacterium was also identified in the same individual. However, further details, including the patient's identity, are yet to be disclosed.

HMPV, first detected in China earlier this year, has sparked alarm as hospitals in the country face a surge in cases, particularly among children. The virus has also been reported in Japan, Malaysia, and India in recent weeks, raising concerns of its regional spread.

The virus primarily causes cold-like symptoms and tends to become more active during winter. Health experts have recommended wearing masks and maintaining proper hygiene, including frequent handwashing with soap, to reduce the risk of infection.

The IEDCR has assured that more information will be provided soon as they monitor the situation closely.
