Beijing, Sep 26 (V7N) – China has successfully test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) for the first time in over four decades. The missile was launched into the Pacific Ocean on Thursday morning, as confirmed by BBC News.
According to a statement from China's Ministry of Defense, the missile, which carried a dummy warhead, was launched at 9:30 a.m. local time and landed in a pre-designated area of the sea. The ministry emphasised that the test was part of China’s annual defence plan and stated that all relevant international laws were adhered to during the process.
While China has traditionally carried out missile tests within its domestic airspace, this marks the first time since 1980 that Beijing has conducted such an ICBM test in international waters.
However, the test has raised concerns among neighbouring nations. Japan claimed it was not provided any advance notice about the missile launch. Additionally, Australia and New Zealand have expressed their unease about the test and its potential implications for regional security.
