Berlin, Oct 13 (V7N)— Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed hope that the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, which began in February 2022, could end next year. Zelensky made this statement during a visit to Berlin, where he sought further military assistance from Germany to support Ukraine’s efforts.

After visiting London, Paris, and Rome, Zelensky arrived in Berlin on Friday to meet German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, thanking Germany for its military and financial support. “It is crucial that we continue receiving this support next year,” Zelensky stated, adding that he would present a strategy to secure victory in the conflict.

Zelensky emphasized Ukraine’s desire for a fair and swift resolution to the war, saying, “No one wants this war to end more than we do. It is destroying our country and costing the lives of our people.”

Chancellor Scholz reaffirmed Germany’s commitment, promising further military equipment this year and four billion euros in aid in 2025. “Germany, together with its EU partners, will continue supporting Ukraine,” Scholz said. “We will not reduce our aid.”

Scholz also stressed the need for a peace conference that includes Russia, emphasizing that peace must be achieved in accordance with international law. "We will not accept a peace dictated by Russia," he added.

Following his meeting with Scholz, Zelensky met with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to formalize the visit.

Earlier in the trip, Zelensky held a private meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican. This was their second personal meeting since the conflict began. The Pope had previously urged Ukrainians to “raise the white flag and negotiate,” a suggestion that received mixed reactions in Ukraine.

The war between Russia and Ukraine, which started after Russia’s military operation in February 2022, has seen multiple failed attempts at peace talks. However, Zelensky’s latest remarks reflect a renewed sense of optimism for ending the conflict by 2025.
