TEHRAN, Jan 22, (V7N) – Iranian authorities executed a man on Wednesday for the murder of a police officer in Zarandieh, central Iran, as reported by the judiciary's official news agency, Mizan Online.

The incident occurred on May 30, 2023, in Markazi province, where the convict deliberately ran over the police commander with a car while the officer was stopping smugglers along a highway.

The perpetrator was sentenced to death under Iranian law, which permits capital punishment in murder cases when the victim’s family demands it.

"The victim's parents refused to forgive the killer, and the death sentence was carried out in Saveh prison this morning," Mizan reported.

Iran has one of the world's highest execution rates, second only to China, as noted by human rights organizations such as Amnesty International.

Capital punishment in Iran is imposed for crimes such as murder, drug trafficking, rape, and sexual assault.

In a similar case in December, a man was executed in Tehran after being convicted of assaulting dozens of women.
