Washington, July 7 (V7N) — U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to BRICS member countries, threatening an additional 10 percent tariff on any nation within the bloc that adopts what he described as “anti-American policies.”

The warning came on Monday through a post on Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social, as the BRICS summit continues in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. While Trump did not specify which actions or policies he considers “anti-American,” his statement has stirred fresh debate and speculation within the international community.

Observers suggest Trump’s reaction may be linked to BRICS efforts to challenge U.S. dominance in global trade, currency systems, and energy markets. The bloc’s continued expansion and initiatives aimed at reducing reliance on the U.S. dollar are seen as moves that could undermine American economic influence.

BRICS, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, represents about 40 percent of the world’s population and nearly a quarter of global GDP. In 2014, the group established the New Development Bank (NDB), headquartered in Shanghai, with a mission to finance infrastructure and sustainable development projects in member and partner countries. The NDB also aims to reduce member nations’ dependence on the U.S. dollar and the euro in international transactions.

Trump’s latest remarks underscore rising tensions as BRICS positions itself as an alternative force in the global economic order.
