SYDNEY, Feb 5, (V7N) – Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reaffirmed his government’s commitment to a two-state solution in the Middle East on Wednesday, following reports that U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed a controversial plan for a U.S. takeover of Gaza.

Speaking to reporters, Albanese emphasized that Australia's stance "remains the same" and that he would not provide "daily commentary" on Trump's remarks regarding the resettlement of Palestinians and the redevelopment of the war-ravaged enclave.

"We have had a long-standing bipartisan position for a two-state solution," Albanese said, reiterating Australia's support for an independent Palestinian state coexisting with Israel "in peace and security."

The prime minister clarified that Canberra has not received any requests regarding the rebuilding of Gaza. However, he underscored Australia’s consistent advocacy for a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and humanitarian aid access to Gaza.

"Australia's position is the same as it was this morning, as it was last year, and as it was 10 years ago," he added.

Successive Australian governments, across party lines, have supported a negotiated two-state resolution, Albanese said, reaffirming that commitment remains unchanged despite shifting geopolitical discussions.
