Guwahati, Nov 09 (V7N) - Patriotic People’s Front Assam (PPFA) has urged that the full truth behind the 1983 Nellie massacre must be made public, supporting the state government’s decision to table the Tewari Commission report in the Assam Legislative Assembly. The forum emphasized that any attempt to portray the Asomiya people as “anti-Muslim” must be countered with verified facts to correct misleading narratives.
The Nellie massacre, which occurred on 18 February 1983 in central Assam, resulted in the deaths of over 2,000 Bangladesh-origin Muslim settlers. National and international media have widely reported that most victims were women and children. However, PPFA highlighted that very few reports mention that hundreds of tribal and mainstream Assamese individuals were also allegedly killed in retaliatory violence.
PPFA questioned the logistics of the killings, asking how locals, reportedly without sophisticated weapons, could have carried out such large-scale violence within hours. The forum also raised concerns about the location of the victims’ burials and whether mass graves exist in Nellie.
The organization stated that making the Tewari Commission report public could help clarify the events of that day, providing factual insight into one of India’s most tragic communal incidents.
The statement urged citizens and authorities to pursue a balanced understanding of the incident to prevent historical distortion and ensure justice for all affected communities.
