Beirut, (12 June 2024) – Extreme tension has once again escalated on the Lebanon-Israel border following retaliatory attacks. The armed group Hezbollah launched an attack on Israel in protest against the death of a senior commander in an Israeli airstrike. Al Jazeera reports that the situation has intensified.

On Wednesday, June 12, the Iran-backed Hezbollah claimed to have fired over 100 rockets at the occupied Golan Heights from southern Lebanon. While there were no immediate reports of casualties, the northern city of Israel is believed to have sustained significant damage. Israeli authorities, however, claimed to have repelled multiple rockets.

This escalation follows an Israeli airstrike on Tuesday, June 11, which resulted in the death of three Hezbollah members and a senior field commander. In retaliation, Hezbollah initiated a counterattack, firing rockets into Israeli territory.

Since the onset of the invasion of Gaza, the border between Lebanon and Israel has been a hotspot of continuous confrontations. The ongoing attacks have further strained the already fragile peace in the region.
