Brasilia, Mar 14 (V7N) — Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been hospitalized with pneumonia and is currently under intensive care, doctors confirmed. His condition is serious but stable, and he is receiving ongoing treatment.
Bolsonaro, 70, was admitted to DF Star Hospital in the capital, Brasilia, early Friday (Mar 13) after exhibiting high fever, chills, and low blood oxygen levels. Medical examinations revealed he had developed pneumonia. He is being treated with antibiotics.
Dr. Brasil Caiado, speaking to reporters, said Bolsonaro’s condition requires ICU monitoring and he may remain hospitalized for several days. No surgery is currently needed.
Bolsonaro served as Brazil’s president from 2019 to 2022 and has a history of health issues. He sustained a serious stabbing injury during his 2018 election campaign, which led to multiple hospitalizations and several surgeries. Earlier this year in January, he was hospitalized after a head injury from a fall, and in December he received treatment for hernia and a long-term hiccup condition.
Currently, Bolsonaro is serving a 27-year prison sentence. He was convicted for allegedly conspiring to overturn the 2022 presidential election, in which he was defeated by the current President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Medical authorities continue to closely monitor his condition as he undergoes treatment in the ICU.
