Komi Republic, 27 June 2024 – A passenger train derailment in Russia's Komi Republic has resulted in serious injuries to 70 people, with five in critical condition. The incident, involving nine carriages of a train bound for the Black Sea port city of Novorossiysk, occurred on Wednesday, June 26, according to reports from Russian railway authorities.

The derailment happened approximately 5,000 kilometers from Vorkuta in northeastern Komi. At the time of the accident, the train was carrying 232 passengers in 14 compartments. Despite the severity of the derailment, no fatalities have been reported.

Russian Railways authorities announced via Telegram that emergency services were dispatched to the scene promptly. Efforts are underway to assist the passengers and identify the injured. Authorities suspect that recent heavy rains in the Northeast Komi region may have contributed to the derailment.

A task force, led by Russian Railways General Director Oleg Belozerov, has been formed to investigate the cause of the derailment. Train operations on the affected line have been suspended until further notice.

Emergency services are working to provide aid to the injured and ensure the safety of all passengers. The Russian railway authorities are also identifying the names and identities of the injured passengers.

This incident underscores the importance of maintaining rigorous safety protocols and infrastructure inspections, particularly in regions susceptible to severe weather conditions. The investigation will aim to determine the exact cause of the derailment and prevent future occurrences.
