Beijing, June 27 2024 – In a significant move as part of an ongoing anti-corruption campaign, China’s Communist Party has expelled former defense minister Li Shangfu and his predecessor Wei Fenghe. The state news agency Xinhua reported the expulsions on Thursday.

Xinhua cited the Communist Party, stating substantial evidence of bribery against Li Shangfu. He has been accused of exploiting his position for personal gain and failing to uphold political office. The party noted that Li Shangfu had betrayed his mission as a military leader, causing significant damage to national defense.

Wei Fenghe, Li Shangfu’s predecessor, faced charges of disrupting political and organizational order, obstructing investigations, accepting bribes, and losing trust and loyalty.

The expulsions come as part of President Xi Jinping's broader anti-corruption drive, which has targeted numerous high-ranking officials and military leaders. The campaign aims to eradicate corruption and ensure loyalty within the ranks of the Communist Party and the Chinese military.

This crackdown underscores the Chinese government’s commitment to rooting out corruption at all levels, maintaining discipline, and preserving the integrity of its political and military institutions.
