London, July 5, 2024 – Apsana Begum, a candidate of Bangladeshi origin, has secured a decisive victory in the Poplar and Limehouse constituency during the British election. Contesting for the second time, Apsana defeated her nearest rival by a margin of 12,000 votes.

Apsana received a significant number of votes, with her closest competitor, Nathalie from the Green Party, obtaining 5,975 votes. Another candidate and Apsana's ex-husband, Ehteshamul Haque, also a British Bangladeshi, received 4,554 votes.

Apsana was born and raised in Tower Hamlets, though her family hails from Jagannathpur in Sunamganj. Her father, Monir Uddin, has also been a councilor in Tower Hamlets, reflecting a strong family involvement in local politics.

In an interview following her victory, Apsana expressed her gratitude to her supporters and reaffirmed her commitment to advocating for the oppressed. She particularly emphasized her dedication to speaking out for Palestinians and continuing the fight against brutality in the region.
