United States, Aug 26, 2024 (v7n) - Hurricane Hone, a Category 1 storm, brushed past Hawaii's Big Island on Sunday, bringing heavy rain and dangerous swells. With maximum sustained winds of 80 miles (130 kilometers) per hour, the storm gradually moved away from the island. Tropical storm conditions were expected to persist into the early afternoon, with wind and rainfall diminishing through the evening.

The storm brought between three and eight inches (7.6 to 20.3 centimeters) of rain to Hawaii and surrounding islands. In response, local authorities closed beaches and opened emergency shelters, while more than 23,000 customers lost power due to the storm.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned of life-threatening surf and rip current conditions along coastlines. Following Hone, Hurricane Gilma, a stronger Category 3 storm, was also in the Pacific but still far from Hawaii, with expectations of weakening before potentially affecting the area.
