Washington D.C, Sep 21 (V7N) — In a significant development ahead of the upcoming US presidential election, Vice President Kamala Harris has received growing public support, not just from Democrats, but also from prominent figures within the Republican Party. Among those endorsing Harris are former President George W. Bush and several officials from previous Republican administrations, marking a notable shift in political alliances.

The backing of Harris by these former Republican officials was made public in a letter released on Wednesday. In the letter, they explicitly voiced their concerns about the candidacy of former President Donald Trump, describing him as unfit for a second term as president. This letter follows ongoing debates about Trump's leadership and suitability for office, particularly in light of his involvement in the 6 January 2021 attack on the Capitol.

The letter, signed by George W. Bush and several key Republican figures, expressed their belief in Harris' capabilities as a leader. "We believe that a principled and important leader must be elected as the President of the United States. Kamala Harris has the qualities and abilities required to be president, Donald Trump does not," the letter stated.

The signatories cited Trump's previous tenure as a period marked by controversy and instability, recalling how "almost every day there was a ruckus in the government on some issue." They further criticised Trump for his role in the Capitol Hill attack, accusing him of betraying the oath of office. "He is unfit not only for the office of the President of the United States but also for the office of the head of any government institution concerned with public trust," the letter read.

Kamala Harris was also praised for her foreign policy expertise, with some former Republican congressional leaders joining the call for her to lead the nation. This cross-party support signals increasing confidence in Harris’ leadership qualities as the election draws nearer.

In the wake of this endorsement, a New York Times poll revealed that Harris is currently four points ahead of Trump, reflecting growing momentum for her campaign.

As the 2024 presidential race intensifies, Harris’ ability to garner support from across the political spectrum could play a pivotal role in her path to the presidency, positioning her as a unifying figure at a time of deep political division in the United States.
