Dhaka, Sep 25 (V7N) – Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Water Resources Adviser, has announced that Bangladesh is set to initiate negotiations with India on the sharing of water from transboundary rivers.
Speaking at a seminar titled "Bangladesh's Fair Share of Water in Shared Rivers" held at Pani Bhaban in Dhaka to mark World Rivers Day, Rizwana emphasized that the talks will proceed based on public opinion and the results will be shared transparently with the people.
While addressing the complexities surrounding international water-sharing agreements, Rizwana pointed out that essential data exchange, such as rainfall information and river structure locations, should not be politicized. This exchange, she explained, can help mitigate potential harm to lives and properties.
Rizwana, who also serves as the adviser for environment, forest, and climate change, added that unilateral action in international courts on such issues is not an option. Both countries must cooperate in seeking resolutions.
"Sharing rainfall data is a humanitarian necessity. Essential data must be provided to save lives, and Bangladesh’s position will be communicated clearly and forcefully," she stated.
She also underscored the importance of protecting Bangladesh's internal rivers, referring to them as "living entities" that need to be safeguarded collectively.
The seminar saw participation from researchers, environmentalists, and government officials.
