Dhaka, Oct 14 (V7N): Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, has called on manufacturers to prioritize sustainability by producing durable electronic goods.
Speaking at a seminar titled "Formal E-Waste Management" on Sunday, marking International E-Waste Day, Rizwana stressed the need for collaboration among stakeholders in addressing the country's e-waste challenges. She encouraged organizations and individuals to actively participate in supporting the environment ministry by providing input for the successful implementation of e-waste management policies.
Rizwana urged consumers to avoid discarding electronics prematurely due to short-lived trends and emphasized the importance of proper e-waste disposal as the government moves forward with enforcing the E-waste Management Rules, 2021.
She highlighted waste reduction as a key strategy and called for the promotion and regulation of the recycling industry. The adviser also stressed the necessity of a comprehensive, nationwide e-waste management system, involving government bodies, the private sector, and citizens alike.
Warning about the environmental and health risks posed by informal recycling practices, she pointed to the dangers of handling hazardous materials without proper precautions.
The seminar brought together policymakers, environmental experts, and industry leaders to discuss e-waste management challenges and solutions for Bangladesh, emphasizing the harmful impacts of informal recycling methods such as open burning, which contributes to pollution and health hazards.
