Dhaka, Oct 28 (V7N)- In a notable development, Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam, prominent leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement, have submitted a petition to the High Court seeking a ban on the Awami League, Bangladesh’s ruling party, and an end to all of its political activities. Hasnat Abdullah, convener of the movement, confirmed the filing on Monday.
The case is expected to be reviewed by a High Court bench consisting of Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Sikder Md. Mahmudur Razi, according to court sources. This writ follows a similar legal challenge in August when a High Court bench led by Justice AKM Asaduzzaman dismissed a petition aiming to prohibit the Awami League.
The anti-discrimination student movement recently issued a demand to disband the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of the Awami League, labeling it a "terrorist organization." Following this, the interim government officially banned the BCL on October 23 under these grounds.
This petition marks an escalation in efforts by the movement to take legal action against what they claim are discriminatory practices and violence within political organizations in Bangladesh.
