Dhaka, Oct 28 (V7N)- United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk is set to visit Bangladesh on October 29-30 to address various human rights matters. During his visit, he will engage in discussions with government officials, civil society representatives, and several senior figures, including Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus, as announced by the UN office in Dhaka on Monday.

High Commissioner Türk’s schedule includes meetings with advisers across multiple ministries, the Chief Justice, the army chief, and the leaders of key reform commissions. Additionally, he will speak at the University of Dhaka, meeting students involved in recent protests, and will also hold discussions with representatives from UN agencies and diplomatic missions in Bangladesh.

The high commissioner is expected to conclude his visit with a news conference in Dhaka on Wednesday. His trip follows an invitation from Chief Adviser Prof Yunus, requesting an impartial investigation into human rights violations reported from July 1 to August 15. A UN fact-finding team was previously deployed to assess these issues, analyze underlying causes, and offer recommendations for justice, accountability, and long-term reforms.

In August, Türk held a phone discussion with Chief Adviser Prof Yunus. During a recent visit to New York, Prof Yunus emphasized Bangladesh’s ambition to build a brighter, more prosperous future and urged support from the international community.

Since Bangladesh’s induction as a full UN member on September 17, 1974, this engagement reflects ongoing cooperation between the interim government and the UN rights body. An advance UN team visited Bangladesh from August 22-29, interacting with various stakeholders, including student leaders, advisers, the Chief Justice, senior security officers, lawyers, journalists, human rights defenders, political party representatives, and members of minority and indigenous communities.
