Dhaka, Nov 13 (V7N)- Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin has called for support from the global community, particularly the French government, to facilitate a sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis by addressing its underlying causes. The appeal was made during a meeting with French Special Envoy to Myanmar, Christian Lechervy, at the foreign ministry on Tuesday.

During discussions, the foreign secretary underscored the urgency of repatriating displaced Rohingya to Myanmar, expressing Bangladesh’s disappointment at the stalled progress. He voiced concerns over the ongoing violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, which has led to fresh arrivals into Bangladesh in recent months, exacerbating the existing strain on local communities.

He noted the heavy toll on host communities and emphasized the decline in international humanitarian aid, warning of potential challenges for both Rohingya refugees and local populations. The secretary also referenced a recent proposal by Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus urging the UN Secretary-General to convene an international conference on the Rohingya issue.

In response, Ambassador Lechervy praised Bangladesh’s humanitarian efforts and assured continued French support. He emphasized the importance of addressing escalating violence in Myanmar, especially in Rakhine, and suggested that political dialogue in Myanmar incorporate the Rohingya issue.

Both sides discussed the complex roots of the Rohingya crisis, including the roles of regional and global actors, and the need for accountability for the atrocities faced by the displaced Rohingya.
