Dhaka, Nov 16 (V7N)- Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman today criticized the judiciary for its role in facilitating the establishment of authoritarian rule under former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Speaking at a training workshop on investigative journalism related to legal affairs at the Midas Centre in Dhaka, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman condemned a section of the media for its complicity in reinforcing such governance. The workshop was organized by TIB in collaboration with the Supreme Court Reporters Forum (SRF).

He remarked, “The judiciary and media’s independence are intrinsically linked,” stressing that political reforms were essential to ensuring the proper functioning of the judiciary. He emphasized that journalists could play a crucial role in pushing for such reforms.

Dr. Iftekharuzzaman pointed out that instead of holding the government accountable, parts of the judiciary and media had enabled authoritarian practices.

The workshop, which aimed to equip journalists with skills to investigate judicial irregularities, was also addressed by Masudur Rahman, President of the Supreme Court Reporters Forum, and Golam Rabbani, the General Secretary.

Additional Attorney General Anik R Haque assured legal support to journalists facing contempt of court allegations.
