Dhaka, Dec 09 (V7N) – Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Sajjat Ali has publicly apologized for the police's unprofessional and ineffective actions during the July-August student-led uprising.

"I sincerely apologize to the residents of Dhaka and the nation for the DMP's actions that crossed professional boundaries during the student-public movement," the commissioner stated at a press briefing held this morning at the DMP Media Centre on Minto Road.

Disciplinary measures, including transfers and penalties, have been implemented against officials responsible for the misconduct. "We are now embarking on a new phase of service to the people," he affirmed.

Challenges and Steps Forward
Following the uprising, the law and order situation worsened, particularly after August 5, as police inaction led to increased incidents of theft, robbery, and unrest. Commissioner Sajjat noted that with collective effort, these challenges have been addressed.

To prevent further deterioration, the DMP is holding community meetings at police stations to ensure better coordination. He also announced that police would respond to complaints within an hour of a General Diary (GD) being filed, with officers trained to act promptly.

“We aim to reduce response times and guarantee immediate police assistance,” he said, adding that specialized training for officers is already underway.

Traffic Management and Public Safety Concerns
The commissioner expressed dissatisfaction with Dhaka's traffic chaos, citing pedestrians ignoring rules, street vendors occupying footpaths, and motorbikes encroaching on pedestrian spaces. "Since assuming my role on November 21, I have been closely monitoring these issues," he said, stressing the need for public awareness to resolve the situation.

He warned that the unchecked presence of battery-run rickshaws could render city roads unfit for vehicles. With Dhaka currently having only 7% road space instead of the ideal 25%, these rickshaws are worsening congestion, he stated, promising steps to address the problem.

Crime and Extortion
Addressing concerns over rising mugging incidents, especially in the early hours, the commissioner instructed the Detective Branch (DB) to stay vigilant. He also highlighted extortion as a significant contributor to price hikes in daily essentials, urging citizens not to pay extortionists.

Future Initiatives
The DMP plans to introduce public complaint boxes and host open discussions to gather suggestions from residents. The commissioner also voiced concerns over motorbike riders transporting entire families, calling such practices dangerous. Authorities have been directed to take action against these violations.
