Dhaka, Dec 09 (V7N) – India reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with Bangladesh’s interim government during the Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) held between the two nations on Saturday.

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri expressed optimism about continuing mutually beneficial cooperation across various sectors. "We envision a relationship that is people-centric and people-oriented, ensuring the benefits of our engagement reach all," Misri said during a media briefing.

Highlighting areas of collaboration, he mentioned trade, connectivity, energy, water sharing, and cultural cooperation as critical pillars of the bilateral relationship. "There is no reason why this cooperation cannot continue delivering benefits for both our peoples," he added.

Misri also addressed concerns regarding recent incidents in Bangladesh, including attacks on cultural, religious, and diplomatic properties. He emphasized India’s focus on the safety and welfare of minorities while discussing recent developments in the country.

Reflecting on political changes in Bangladesh since August, Misri noted that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first to congratulate Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus upon assuming office. Their cordial exchanges, including Yunus's participation in the Voice of the Global South Summit in August, underscored the close diplomatic ties between the two nations.

Misri’s visit marked the first secretary-level engagement since the change in Bangladesh’s leadership and follows several high-level interactions, including meetings on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in September.

Amid strained relations following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina and India's critical media coverage of Bangladesh, Misri expressed hope for constructive and forward-looking cooperation. "We expect a positive approach from the Bangladesh authorities to move the relationship forward," he remarked.

He emphasized the need for dialogue and mutual understanding to address challenges while fostering a strong and constructive partnership.

Misri arrived in Dhaka on Saturday morning aboard an Indian Air Force aircraft, marking a significant step in rekindling ties between the two neighbors.
