7 Awami League leaders detained at National Memorial

Dhaka, Dec 16 (V7N) –Seven Awami League leaders and activists were detained by the police at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar on Monday while they came to lay floral tributes on Victory Day.

The incident occurred around 12:30pm near the Shaheed Bedi.

Abu Bakkar Siddique, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ashulia police station, confirmed the detention.


He said: “Among those detained are Mahbubur Rahman, former general secretary of Dhaka District Awami League and Dhaka District Council chairman and former Dhaka-19 constituency MP Milton.”

According to Awami League leaders and activists, Mahbubur Rahman, leading a group of workers affiliated with Dhaka-19 constituency, came to the memorial to pay homage to the martyrs by laying flowers.


Shortly afterward, officials from the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police and Ashulia police arrived at the scene and detained seven individuals, including the activists carrying flower bouquets.

Details surrounding the detention remain unclear, and police have not disclosed specific charges or reasons for the detentions.

Authorities are yet to make an official statement on the matter.
