Dhaka, Mar 02 (V7N) - Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has called on businesspeople to refrain from increasing the prices of essential commodities during the holy month of Ramadan. The appeal was made during a visit to the Mirpur Police Lines barracks in the capital, where he emphasized the importance of ensuring affordability for consumers during this significant period.
Jahangir Alam highlighted that in many Muslim-majority countries, including those in the Middle East, prices of goods are kept low during Ramadan. However, in Bangladesh, traders often hike prices during festivals, placing an additional burden on consumers.
“I would like to request the businesspeople not to raise the prices of commodities at this time. During Ramadan, they should keep the prices of goods as low as possible. If this can be done, consumers will be relieved,” he said.
The Home Adviser also noted that the current prices of essential items are lower compared to previous years, attributing this to effective monitoring and market interventions. He expressed hope that prices could be controlled without the need for raids or strict enforcement measures.
Jahangir Alam also addressed broader social behavior during Ramadan, urging people to refrain from smoking in public places and eating outside during daylight hours. “These actions show respect for those who are fasting,” he said, referencing a recent incident in Lalmatia where two women were attacked.
During his visit to the Mirpur Police Lines, the Home Adviser inspected the quality of food and iftar items provided to personnel. He instructed senior officials to ensure that there is no compromise on the quality of meals served in the barracks.
The Home Adviser’s appeal comes at a time when rising prices of essential commodities have become a pressing concern for many Bangladeshis. Ramadan, a month of fasting and spiritual reflection, often sees increased demand for food items, making price stability crucial for low- and middle-income families.
By urging traders to act responsibly, Jahangir Alam aims to alleviate the financial strain on consumers and promote a sense of community during the holy month.
As Ramadan approaches, the government’s focus on price control and market monitoring will be critical in ensuring that essential goods remain affordable. The Home Adviser’s call for restraint from traders underscores the need for collective responsibility in supporting vulnerable communities during this important time.
