Dhaka, Mar 13 (V7N)– The upcoming visit of UN Secretary-General António Guterres to Bangladesh is expected to accelerate efforts to resolve the Rohingya crisis, according to Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.
Speaking at a press conference at Dhaka’s Foreign Service Academy on Wednesday, he said that the chief adviser aims to bring global priority to the issue.
Guterres is set to arrive in Bangladesh on Thursday for a 4-day visit. On Friday, he and Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus will visit the Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar, where the UN chief will hold separate meetings with Rohingya leaders, youth representatives, and women.
When asked about the interim government's approach to Rohingya repatriation amid Myanmar's conflict, where rebel groups currently hold power, Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said: “The government is working through diplomatic channels to ensure their return. Our diplomatic efforts are ongoing.”
While the Rohingya issue remains a key focus, the UN chief will also meet with the Consensus Commission to discuss reforms and the upcoming elections, the press wing confirmed.
