The Road Safety Foundation has called on the government to allocate 15% of the allocation for the road and transport sector in the upcoming budget for the 2025–26 fiscal year for road safety programs.

In a statement, the organization requested that this portion of the budget be directed towards infrastructure development for safety, research, enhancing pedestrian security, training and awareness campaigns for road users, and effective enforcement of traffic laws, saying these vital areas currently lack adequate allocation in the national budget.

It emphasized that preventing road accidents requires more than just building quality roads and ensuring defect-free vehicles.

“It is a suicidal decision for the government to spend hundreds of crores on road construction while failing to provide necessary funding for road safety measures,” the statement said.

“Each year, a significant number of children, adolescents, and working-age people from lower- and middle-income families are killed or disabled in road accidents, intensifying the country’s socio-economic crisis.”

In light of this, the Road Safety Foundation called for the introduction of a separate economic budget code in the upcoming national budget to ensure that 15% of the total allocation for the road transport sector is dedicated to road safety initiatives.

It stressed that addressing this issue should be considered a national priority.
