Jhenaidah, Mar 16 (V7N) – Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman on Monday said the government is committed to implementing the July Charter through constitutional and lawful processes.

“BNP does not want to run the country through misleading assurances and promises. The government is committed to implementing the July Charter through constitutional and legal procedures to fulfil the aspirations of the people,” he said.

The minister made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of the re-excavation of the Shirishkath canal at Kanyadah village in Harinakunda upazila of Jhenaidah.

He said the canal was originally excavated during the tenure of former president Ziaur Rahman as part of a nationwide initiative to improve irrigation and agricultural productivity.

According to the minister, the events of July changed the course of the nation’s journey and the July Charter reflects the sacrifices of those who were killed or forcibly disappeared during democratic movements in different periods, including 1952, 1971, 1982–90 and 2007–2024.

He said the government would move forward with implementing the provisions of the charter in accordance with the constitution.

Highlighting the canal excavation programme initiated by Ziaur Rahman, the minister said the former president had shown the path toward economic self-reliance through nationwide water management initiatives.

He added that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has revived the canal excavation programme, which he said would contribute to development and increased agricultural production across the country.

The programme was presided over by Jhenaidah Deputy Commissioner Abdullah Al Masud.

Among others present were lawmakers Ali Azam Md Abu Bakar, Matiar Rahman and Abu Talib, Jhenaidah Zila Parishad Administrator MA Majid and Superintendent of Police Mahfuz Afzal.
