Jhalakathi, Mar 16 (V7N) – Several fishermen in Kanthalia upazila of Jhalakathi have accused a union parishad member of demanding bribes in exchange for distributing government assistance meant for those who refrained from catching jatka.
Four fishermen from Balatola village under Ward No. 4 of Shauljalia Union submitted a written complaint to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer on Monday seeking action over the allegation.
According to the complaint, fishermen including Firoz Mia, A Salam and A Khalek Mia said they hold registered fishermen cards and were supposed to receive government rice support provided to discourage jatka fishing.
However, they alleged that the ward’s Union Parishad member Kabir Hossain demanded Tk 1,200 from each fisherman as a bribe to receive the allotted 40 kg of rice.
The complainants said they were deprived of the assistance as they could not pay the demanded amount, while those who paid the money received the rice.
Denying the allegation, Kabir Hossain Howlader said a group is conspiring against him.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Makbul Hossain said the administration has heard the statements of the fishermen who were deprived of the assistance.
“We will investigate the matter and take action if the allegations are proven,” he said.
