To ensure a festive and secure atmosphere during Eid-ul-Azha, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has issued an 18-point safety advisory for city residents.

The advisory was announced through a press release on Tuesday by Deputy Commissioner (Media) Muhammad Talebur Rahman.

According to the release, the DMP has completed all necessary preparations to ensure a joyful and safe Eid, including the security of residences, institutions, and marketplaces.

The statement emphasized that alongside police efforts, increased awareness at the individual and institutional levels can significantly contribute to maintaining law and order and curbing crime.

The following guidelines were shared for city dwellers:

Do not transport sacrificial animals using unfit vehicles or boats. Clearly display the destination on banners affixed to vehicles or boats carrying animals. Avoid overloading and ensure animals are loaded and unloaded only in designated areas.

Be vigilant against pickpockets and sedative gangs at cattle markets. Do not accept food or drinks from strangers. Be cautious about counterfeit notes and conduct financial transactions carefully. Deposit proceeds from cattle sales into bank accounts. Use DMP’s money escort service when carrying large amounts of cash.

Report any extortion or illegal toll collection during the transportation of sacrificial animals or at cattle markets to the police.

Exercise caution while purchasing animals online.

Strengthen security protocols for homes, apartments, banks, insurance companies, and shopping centres. Ensure round-the-clock surveillance, and avoid granting leave to all staff members at once—retain a few on duty.

Lock all doors and windows securely before leaving your home or business. Repair any weak doors for better security.

Install an adequate number of CCTV cameras and ensure they are functional. Use auto-locks or alarm-equipped locks on doors. Ensure proper lighting around homes and institutions at night.

Store money, valuables, and important documents in safe places or with trusted relatives. Use bank lockers if necessary.

Request neighbours who will remain in Dhaka to look after your property and maintain regular communication with them.

Tenants planning to leave their flats during Eid should inform the house owners in advance.

Instruct security guards to stay alert against any unauthorised access. Keep garages secure and trim any unwanted branches near windows or doors.

Ensure all electricity, gas, and water connections are switched off before leaving.

Report any suspicious individuals near your residence to the local police station or outpost. Notify police of any untoward incidents or potential threats.

Plan your travel with ample time. Do not ride on rooftops or in goods vehicles due to excess passenger load.

Use zebra crossings or foot overbridges when crossing roads. Seek police assistance if needed.

Avoid reckless driving or joyriding. Do not accept food from strangers.

Bus owners are requested to ensure that no untrained, unlicensed, exhausted, or ill drivers operate their vehicles. Instruct drivers to follow traffic laws and avoid operating unfit vehicles.

Drivers are advised to avoid reckless speed and dangerous overtaking. Always carry your licence and necessary documents and comply with police instructions.
