New York, Sept 27 (V7N) – At the UN General Assembly, Bangladesh Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus hailed the youth-led ‘July Revolution’ that ended decades of authoritarian rule, stressing ongoing reforms to empower young people and women.
Addressing the fourth day of the UN General Assembly’s general debate, Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus credited the country’s youth for ending decades of authoritarian rule through last year’s ‘July Revolution’, calling it “a reminder of the extraordinary power of ordinary people.”
Yunus said the movement, driven largely by the country’s young majority, defeated tyranny and opened the path toward a more just, equal and democratic society. He emphasized that empowering youth and women remains central to Bangladesh’s transition.
Following the uprising, the interim government established 11 independent commissions covering areas from governance to women’s rights. More than 30 political parties signed the ‘July Declaration,’ pledging to uphold democratic reforms and ensure inclusive participation in the country’s political process.
Looking ahead, Yunus said the government’s goal is to shape every young person “not only as a job seeker, but also as a job creator,” underscoring initiatives to foster entrepreneurship, expand women’s participation in public life, and strengthen protections against harassment.
Yunus told the Assembly that these reforms are designed to safeguard democracy and prevent any return to authoritarianism, adding that the July Revolution stands as proof that people’s voices, particularly those of the youth, can transform nations.
