Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, Johan Forssell, reiterated Sweden's commitment to being a steadfast partner to Dhaka, expressing optimism about the potential for increased engagement between the two countries. During a recent visit to Bangladesh, Forssell emphasized the opportunity for more Swedish companies to invest and operate in Bangladesh, recognizing the nation's economic potential and conducive business environment.
Accompanied by UNDP Goodwill Ambassador Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden and UNDP Assistant Secretary General Ulrika Modéer, the delegation engaged in a series of productive meetings with Bangladesh's government officials, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud. The visit aimed to explore sustainable development opportunities and challenges in Bangladesh, fostering dialogue with various stakeholders.
The delegation witnessed firsthand the impact of climate change and adaptation efforts in Koyra, Khulna, and engaged with communities participating in climate resilience projects. Crown Princess Victoria inaugurated a smart service point in Koyra, highlighting the role of technology in advancing sustainable development and digital inclusion, particularly in rural areas.
In Chittagong, the delegation observed UNDP's urban resilience program and interacted with female students at Asian University for Women, underscoring the importance of women's empowerment in building resilient communities.
The visit also included a visit to Hatia Island to observe UNDP's climate resilience initiatives in hard-to-reach areas and a stop at Rohingya refugee camps in Cox's Bazar. Minister Forssell announced Sweden's increased humanitarian aid to Bangladesh, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the needs of Rohingya refugees and ensuring food security.
With a focus on the green transition, the delegation participated in discussions on the private sector's role in enhancing sustainability in Bangladesh. Meetings with major Swedish companies highlighted opportunities for collaboration and investment in Bangladesh's green transition efforts.
The visit underscored Sweden's commitment to supporting Bangladesh's sustainable development goals and strengthening bilateral cooperation across various sectors, affirming the enduring partnership between the two nations.
