The nation is observed the 54th Independence and National Day today with grandeur and reverence. President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina conveyed separate messages on the eve of the day, setting the tone for the celebrations.

Elaborate programs have been arranged at the national level to mark this significant occasion. The day's festivities commenced with gun salutes early in the morning, paying homage to the heroic struggle that led to Bangladesh's independence in 1971 after enduring prolonged subjugation under foreign rule.

Throughout the country, the national flag has been hoisted atop government, semi-government, autonomous, and private buildings as the sun rises. Streets and important city intersections are adorned with national flags and colorful festoons, creating a festive ambiance.

In Dhaka, bands from various forces performed at important locations, adding to the celebratory atmosphere. Illuminations of colorful lights have embellished important buildings, establishments, and city streets.

The National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar has become the focal point of the day's observance. President Mohammed Shahabuddin, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and visiting Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck laid wreaths at the memorial early in the morning to pay their respects to the martyrs.

People from all walks of life, including families of Bir Shreshthas, war-wounded freedom fighters, and members of diplomatic corps, joined in paying homage to the national heroes.

National newspapers are publishing special supplements, while Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television, private radio stations, and television channels are airing month-long special programs on the Liberation War, underscoring the significance of this historic day.

Various cultural and social organizations, including Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Bangla Academy, and Liberation War Museum, have arranged discussions, cultural programs, and sports competitions. Additionally, documentary screenings and movie showings centered on the Liberation War will be held across the country.

Special prayers will be offered at mosques, temples, churches, and other places of worship for the eternal peace of the departed souls, including Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and other martyrs of the War of Liberation.

To mark the day, improved meals will be served to inmates of hospitals, jails, old homes, and orphanages, while children's parks and museums will remain open to the public.

Ships of Bangladesh Navy and Coast Guard will be open for public viewing at various ports, allowing citizens to partake in the day's celebrations. Bangladesh missions abroad will also host similar programs to commemorate this historic occasion.
