Dhaka, Dec 24 (V7N)- The Advisory Council has given final approval to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Ordinance (Amendment), ensuring that the internet will not be shut down even for a minute in the future, said Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser.
He made the statement on Wednesday following the meeting of the Advisory Council.
The Press Secretary said the amended ordinance modernizes and updates previous laws, with special emphasis on preventing internet shutdowns. Through the amendment, the authority, effectiveness and accountability of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) have been strengthened. Provisions have also been included to ensure confidentiality of customer information, quality of service, and to prevent fraud and illegal activities.
Shafiqul Alam said the protection of personal data has been given high importance. A separate committee will review whether the National Telecommunication Monitoring Center (NTMC) should be abolished.
Speaking on budgetary matters, he said that revenue income in the revised budget has been increased to Tk 5.88 lakh crore. Food inflation is expected to come down to 7 percent in the current fiscal year, while GDP growth is projected at 5 percent.
Regarding the killing of Osman Hadi, the Press Secretary said the government is treating the matter with the highest priority. Although the main accused has not yet been arrested, several associates have been taken into custody. He added that the government stands beside the family of Dipu Chandra Das, and the case will be tried under the Speedy Trial Act.
On the issue of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s security, Shafiqul Alam said discussions are ongoing with the BNP, and the government will provide maximum security to him.
Regarding the Awami League, he reiterated that the government’s position is clear, stating that the party’s activities remain banned and it will not be able to participate in the elections.
He also said that the ongoing tensions between Bangladesh and India were discussed during the Advisory Council meeting.
