Dhaka, Dec 24 (V7N)— Experts and health officials have recommended a significant strengthening of government initiatives to expand social security for the elderly, including the enhancement of old-age allowances and the establishment of pension rehabilitation centers. The call was made during a meeting titled "Elderly Health: Challenges and Actions," organized by the Ministry of Health at the Secretariat on Wednesday. Addressing the session, Health Adviser Nurjahan Begum emphasized that ensuring economic and social security for senior citizens is a collective responsibility, urging the private sector and civil society to join government efforts in addressing these growing needs.

Adviser Nurjahan Begum highlighted a looming demographic shift, noting that Bangladesh is currently home to approximately 15 million people aged 60 and above. Citing World Health Organization (WHO) projections, she warned that this number is expected to exceed 21 million by 2030. The Adviser stressed the urgent need for a comprehensive national policy for the elderly to ensure that the country’s development remains balanced and inclusive. The meeting concluded with a consensus on the need to move beyond traditional views of aging, advocating for integrated healthcare and social safety nets that protect the dignity and well-being of the older population as their numbers continue to rise.
