Due to the prevailing heatwave engulfing the nation, the government has opted to shut down all primary and secondary schools, colleges, and madrassas from April 21 to April 27. This decision prioritizes the health safety of students attending educational institutions.

Mahbubur Rahman, the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, along with a senior official from the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, conveyed this information on Saturday.

Originally, government schools were scheduled to resume classes on Sunday following the Eid and Pohela Boishakh holidays.

Earlier measures included the suspension of daily assemblies at primary schools nationwide until further notice, as directed by the Directorate of Primary and Mass Education, as a response to the ongoing heatwave.

The highest temperature recorded in the country this year reached 41.3°C in Chuadanga on Friday. Chuadanga has consistently registered the highest temperature nationwide for the fourth consecutive day, as reported by the Chuadanga Weather Observatory.

Furthermore, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department issued a 72-hour heat alert as the heatwave persists across most regions, accompanied by sporadic rains and thundershowers in certain areas.

This closure echoes a similar decision made in June 2023 when schools, colleges, and madrassas were shut due to heatwave conditions.
