Election Commissioner (EC) Md Alamgir said that the directive to the MP-minister's relatives not to become candidates in the upcoming Upazila Parishad elections is a decision made by the political parties.

He said that the Election Commission has no opinion on this. But any decision to make elections fair and peaceful is welcome.

He said these to the reporters before exchanging views with the candidates in Harirampur and Singarai Upazila Parishad elections of Manikganj held at the Manikganj District Commissioner's conference room on Saturday afternoon.

EC Alamgir said: “One is the political party’s decision. Another is the Election Commission Act. There is no connection between relatives and non-relatives in the Election Commission Act.”

Regarding whether the election is participative as a big party is out of the election, the election commissioner said that since this election is not political, everyone is participating spontaneously.

Although unofficially, BNP leaders are participating in the elections in various places. That means participatory elections are going to be held. The election should be fair, free and impartial, he said.

Instructions have been given to the Election Commission and the law enforcement forces to ensure that there is no deterioration of law and order, he added.

Deputy Commissioner Rehena Akhtar along with election-related officials and candidates of Harirampur and Singair upazilas were present in the exchange meeting.
