Foreign Minister said, reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to supporting the struggles of the Palestinian people for achieving their right to freedom and justice

Dr. Hasan Mahmud, the foreign minister, called on the nations of the global South to unite and show solidarity to realize the ultimate objectives of sustainable development on Sunday January 21.

In Kampala, Uganda, he made the call during the General Debate of the Third South Summit between China and the Group of 77 (G-77).

He emphasized the continued global crises brought on by rising protectionism, wars, sanctions and counter-sanctions, the financial crisis, and climate change. He also stated that the G-77 member states and China needed to use South-South cooperation to overcome these obstacles.

He mentioned the historic speech given by the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, at the 29th UN General Assembly in 1974, and asserted that the message of Bangabandhu remains highly pertinent in the current global environment.

To create a more just and equitable world, the foreign minister highlighted five urgent issues: (i) implementing the SDGs more effectively; (ii) reforming the current international financial architecture; (iii) addressing technological divides; (iv) guaranteeing gender equality everywhere; and (v) empowering youth through job creation and skill development.

He went on to emphasize in his speech the practical and pro-development policies of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, which have contributed to Bangladesh's consistent economic progress over the past 15 years.

Additionally, he restated Bangladesh's dedication to aiding the Palestinian people in their fight for independence and justice.

He was present at the Summit's opening ceremony earlier in the day.

Yoweri Museveni, the president of Uganda and the new chair of the group, chaired the opening ceremony. This was his third South Summit.

Additionally speaking at the session were Liu Guozhong, the President of China's Special Representative, Dennis Francis, the President of the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, and Soltan bin Saad Al-Muraikhi, the State Minister for Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar, which is hosting the Second South Summit.
