Dhaka, Aug 27 (V7N): A petition has been filed with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court requesting a review of its 2011 ruling that abolished the non-partisan caretaker government system by declaring the 13th amendment to the Constitution unconstitutional.

The petition was submitted today (27 August) by five individuals, including Badiul Alam Majumder, Secretary of Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (SHUJAN), with Dr. Sharif Bhuiyan representing the petitioners. The other signatories are Tofael Ahmed, M Hafiz Uddin Khan, Zobairul Haque Bhuiyan, and Zahra Rahman.

The petitioners are seeking to overturn the 2011 judgment that invalidated the caretaker government system and request the reinstatement of this system. The Appellate Division Chamber Court had earlier granted permission to file this review petition following an application by the five prominent citizens on 25 August.

According to Dr. Bhuiyan, an approximately 800-page review petition has been prepared, with the Chamber Judge Court's approval.

The 13th amendment, which introduced the caretaker government system, was enacted by the National Parliament in 1996. The system's legality was contested in 1998, leading to a High Court ruling in 2004 that upheld its constitutionality. However, the Appellate Division overturned this decision on 10 May 2011, leading to the enactment of the 15th amendment that abolished the caretaker system and introduced other changes.
