Geneva, Sep 10 (V7N) - During a recent UN address, a senior official voiced concerns about the detrimental impact of entrenched power structures and the misuse of authority on human rights. They highlighted the global progress made through movements against apartheid, racism, and for women’s and environmental rights, illustrating how these struggles have led to greater justice and stability in society.

Focusing on Bangladesh, the speaker pointed to the recent student movement, which has become a symbol of human rights advocacy. With an interim government in place, Bangladesh now has a crucial opportunity to embrace a peaceful and inclusive future, centered on human rights and the rule of law. The official confirmed that their office is assisting the Bangladeshi authorities by conducting an independent investigation into alleged recent human rights abuses, emphasizing accountability, reconciliation, and much-needed reform.

The official also urged voters, both in Bangladesh and globally, to prioritize key issues such as education, healthcare, justice, and the fight against corruption when choosing their political leaders. Stressing the significance of human rights, the address warned against authoritarian figures offering false promises and reminded citizens that when one group is unfairly targeted, others may soon follow.
