Bangladesh Bank Governor, Abdur Rouf Talukder, discloses a significant development in the fight against money laundering, revealing the closure of approximately 200 mobile financial services (MFS) accounts each day due to their involvement in Hundi transactions. This revelation underscores the central bank's unwavering commitment to curbing illicit financial activities through stringent monitoring of trade transactions and MFS operations.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of a workshop on money laundering prevention held at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters in the capital, Governor Talukder emphasized the pivotal role of the central bank in preventing money laundering since assuming office in 2022. He highlighted measures taken to address foreign exchange crises and combat over-invoicing, underscoring ongoing initiatives to tackle money laundering schemes, including those exploiting export profits kept abroad.

Governor Talukder reaffirmed the central bank's staunch stance against Hundi transactions, citing examples of expatriates sending remittances through informal channels that evade regulatory oversight. He emphasized the closure of MFS accounts associated with such activities, signaling robust enforcement actions against offenders.

In addition to addressing Hundi-related challenges, Governor Talukder shed light on the ongoing campaign against money changers, highlighting their role in exacerbating dollar crises through unauthorized rate hikes. He cautioned against involvement in cryptocurrencies, emphasizing their illegality in Bangladesh.

The workshop, chaired by CID Chief and Additional IGP Muhammad Ali Mia, featured discussions by the head of the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), Md. Masud Biswas, underscoring collaborative efforts to combat money laundering and uphold financial integrity in Bangladesh.
