RAJSHAHI, May 23 (V7N) – Serious environmental pollution and health hazards are plaguing Gargara village in Kakanhat Municipality, Godagari Upazila, Rajshahi, due to alleged negligence in waste management at a chicken farm operated by Nabil Group. Locals report that chicken droppings and other refuse are being openly dumped, leading to an unbearable stench and rendering local water sources unusable.
On-site observations reveal that vast quantities of waste are being discharged directly into the village creek daily, polluting its waters and causing an "unbearable stench" that has made life miserable for residents.
Locals claim that despite repeated complaints to the farm authorities, no effective action has been taken. On the contrary, they allege that waste dumping has increased since their complaints. Residents stated that previously, waste was transported by trucks, but now, "unscrupulous people are dumping waste in the creek and nearby areas late at night (between around 1 and 3 am) to save on transportation costs and escape."
Farmers further report that these toxic wastes are being dumped on cropland, damaging crops and leading to a crisis in farming as the creek water is no longer suitable for irrigation. The pervasive odor has forced residents to keep their doors and windows closed, yet it provides little relief. Children and the elderly are said to be suffering the most, with many experiencing respiratory problems, skin conditions, and stomach ailments.
The pollution is not confined to Gargada village, impacting neighboring Bilasi Khari, Bilasi Gram, Rishikul Union, and other areas within Godagari police station limits.
Dr. Shankar Kumar Biswas, spokesperson for Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, warned that "this type of biodegradable waste can spread pathogens through air pollution, which is risky for animals, birds and humans. In the long run, the environmental balance can be seriously damaged."
Farm authorities, however, assert that they have contracted with a third party for waste management. Nabil Farm's general manager, Salam, stated, "We are aware of the issue. Our responsibility is up to the farm gate, whatever happens outside is a third party's matter. However, I have asked them several times to resolve it."
Nabil Group Deputy Manager (Accounts) Md. Belal Hossain affirmed, "The agreement clearly states that waste cannot be dumped in the open. They have assured us that such a thing will not be done in the future. We want the environment and public health to be protected."
Md. Kabir Hossain, Assistant Director of the Department of Environment, confirmed, "We have received the complaint and have written to the company. If there is no solution, strict legal action will be taken."
