Dhaka, May 29 (V7N) – The low pressure system that developed in the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression, bringing widespread rainfall and disruptions across Bangladesh, including the capital, Dhaka.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the depression, which formed from a low pressure system on May 27, strengthened early Thursday morning (May 29). Since then, moderate to heavy rain has been reported across almost all divisions, causing waterlogging, traffic congestion, and significant public suffering, particularly in urban areas.

While the rain has provided a brief respite from the recent heatwave, it has created difficulties for daily commuters. Streets in parts of Dhaka are submerged, slowing down vehicular movement and forcing many to wade through waterlogged roads.

Meteorologist Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Mallick stated that although the depression has intensified, there is no risk of it turning into a cyclone. However, he warned of continued rainfall over the next 48 hours with a chance of landslides in hilly areas and temporary flooding in low-lying regions.

In response to the evolving weather conditions:

  • All seaports have been advised to hoist local warning signal number three.

  • River ports have been instructed to display warning signal number two.

The Meteorological Department has urged the public, particularly those in vulnerable and coastal regions, to remain alert and follow safety advisories.
